Accra, May 22, 2026 – The Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) has launched a nationwide anti-fraud awareness campaign dubbed “Shine Your Eye”, aimed at protecting bank customers, promoting fraud awareness, and safeguarding public trust in Ghana’s financial sector.

The campaign was officially launched on Friday, May 22, 2026, at the Association’s headquarters in Accra, bringing together more than 250 banking executives, regulators, security agencies, financial sector professionals, and members of the media.

The initiative comes at a time when financial fraud continues to evolve, particularly through digital channels and payment platforms, posing a growing threat to customers and financial institutions alike.

Speaking at the launch, President of the Ghana Association of Banks and Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana, Kwamina Asomaning, described fraud as a direct attack on the trust that underpins the banking industry.

“Banking today is faster, smarter and more sophisticated than ever before. Yet one thing remains constant, its foundation is built on trust. Every deposit made, every transaction processed and every loan extended rests on the belief that our institutions are safe, honest and reliable,” he said.

He stressed that while digital banking, mobile financial services and fintech innovations have expanded access and convenience for millions of Ghanaians, they have also created new opportunities for fraudsters to exploit unsuspecting customers through increasingly sophisticated schemes.

“Fraud will not be allowed to undermine the trust Ghanaians place in their banks,” Mr. Asomaning stated, adding that preserving trust requires vigilance from customers, financial institutions, regulators, security services and the judiciary.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Association of Banks, John Awuah, described the campaign as a collective response to a growing challenge facing the financial sector.

According to him, fraud is no longer an issue that individual institutions can tackle alone. “Fraud is not an institutional problem; it is a global problem. It is transnational, and it requires a coordinated response.

By coming together as an industry, we are sending a clear signal that this is no longer a fight against a single bank but a collective fight involving the entire banking community,” he said.

Mr. Awuah explained that the campaign will focus on both public awareness and internal fraud prevention. While one aspect of the initiative seeks to educate customers on how to identify and avoid scams, another will target bank employees through training and awareness programmes aimed at strengthening internal controls and ethical conduct.

As part of the nationwide rollout, the campaign will be amplified through television, radio, social media, blogs, influencers and other communication channels to ensure the message reaches every segment of society.

Delivering the keynote address virtually, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Pandit Asiamah, underscored the importance of trust in maintaining a stable financial system.

“At the heart of every financial system is one thing: trust,” he said. “Fraud is an attack on that very promise. It is not simply an operational problem for banks to manage; it is a confidence problem for the entire economy.

”The Governor noted that reported fraud cases across Ghana’s financial sector increased significantly in 2025, driven largely by activities on digital platforms and payment channels.

However, he observed that fraud cases within banks had declined, demonstrating that investments in stronger controls, systems and customer awareness can yield positive results.

He called for greater collaboration among banks, regulators, law enforcement agencies and the judiciary to ensure that fraud detection is matched by swift and decisive action against offenders.

The “Shine Your Eye” campaign is expected to run nationwide, from May till the end of the year, encouraging customers to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities and adopt safe banking practices. Organisers believe sustained public education and stronger collaboration among stakeholders will help reduce fraud and strengthen confidence in Ghana’s banking system.

The campaign also seeks to reinforce a simple but powerful message: protecting the integrity of Ghana’s financial sector is a shared responsibility, and every Ghanaian has a role to play in the fight against fraud.
